We celebrated the 1st Anniversary of the Primary Children’s Hospital Level 2 Family Room on December 6, 2018. The room is designed to serve parents and guardians of patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care, Cardiac Intensive Care, and Neuroscience Trauma Units. We have already served over 2,000 families in this first year. Thank you to our major sponsors, including Primary Children’s Hospital, the Kahlert Family Foundation, and RMHC Global, for providing the original resources needed to open this room, allowing us to serve these pediatric patient families.
Kadlin was born on July 16, 2014 at Utah Valley Hospital with a partial chromosome 13 deletion that would shorten her life expectancy drastically. We were transferred to Primary Children’s Hospital which is 2.5 – 3 hours away from our home in rural Utah. While Kadlin stayed in the NICU for 2.5 months, we were overwhelmed with the love and compassion from everyone that worked in either the House or the Family Room. We had a place to sleep, meals provided almost daily, and something fun for my 2 year old Conor to do. We also met other families and connected with those going through similar experiences. We have spent a significant amount of time at the House in the 4.5 years Kadlin has been with us. In that time, we have witnessed the best of humanity. The emotional ups and downs with Kadlin’s complex life can be rough on our family, but we always know we have the Ronald McDonald house to catch us during our difficult times. And we know they will continue to enrich our lives.
A few of our staff had the chance to make one of the recipes from the 2018 Southern Living Christmas Cookbook with some of the children currently staying at the House. Check out the videoof the cake baking and cake decorating process. You will see how much fun was had! If you would like to purchase a cookbook this holiday season, you can do it at your local Dillard’s, through our online storeor Ronald McDonald House Charities on 935 E. South Temple, SLC, Utah. 100% of the proceeds of the cookbooks sold in Utah directly support the families who stay with us every day. Happy Baking!
A Look Back on 30 Years at the Ronald McDonald House
What started as a 13-room house in 1988 has grown to a 72-room house in Salt Lake City, along with two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in Primary Children’s Hospital each with 4-rooms, and Hospitality Carts at Ogden Regional Medical Center and Shriner’s Hospital. With the help of our community over the last thirty years, we have served over 80,000 families!
