Gala 2018

Last month guests and supporters of the Charity were whisked off to ‘Morocco’ for an evening to remember at the 30th annual Spirit of Children Gala! Ballrooms at the Grand America Hotel were draped with swirling fabric and hung with lanterns, while attendees wandered among vases of orchids and even stepped inside a projection dome that took them virtually on a journey through ancient lands. The renowned One Voice Children’s Choir led off the program and touched the heart of RMHC’s mission, followed by an exciting Live Auction and extraordinary series of Helping Hands donations. The magical evening was filled with friends, good-natured competition for unique Silent Auction items, gourmet food, and an outpouring of love and support for families of hospitalized children.

Led by this year’s inaugural ‘Guardian of Light’, Heather Kahlert of the Kahlert Family Foundation, and by our incredibly generous Presenting Sponsor, the George S. & Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, with dedicated support from our Gratitude, Joy, Laughter, Spirit, Heart, and Strength Sponsors, the 2018 Spirit of Children Gala exceeded the fundraising goal with an amazing $1.1 million dollars for families in need. Along with the table sponsors and ticket purchasers, this achievement would not have been possible without the kindness of so many philanthropic vendors, auction donors, and committed volunteers. As the poet Rumi once said: ‘You have within you more love than you could ever understand.’ We are so grateful to have been given the opportunity to experience a little of the light in the hearts of the many individuals and organizations that made Morocco: Kaleidoscope of Lights an extraordinary ‘night of a thousand nights’ that will warm and brighten the paths of so many families throughout the days and nights to come.

Heading Home

The Rijksen-Garcia family is extraordinary in many ways: featured on our 2017 holiday card, little Lunah has had the strength to beat the odds with a heart defect and chromosomal condition and survive past her second birthday; her parents have fought long and hard to receive treatment for their daughter, even travelling to a different country; and they have now broken the record for longest stay at the Ronald McDonald House. While this last accomplishment is the least important, we are thrilled that we have been able to provide a home-away-from-home for nearly two years, or almost all of Lunah’s life so far (1 year, 273 days, 6 hours, and 41 minutes, to be exact). And we are so excited for this lovely family, as they have finally been given medical clearance and are able to return home. We will miss Liandha, Jurrie, and Lunah, and are honored to have had them as part of our family!

Mother’s & Father’s Day Appeal

Who are you honoring this month for Mother’s Day? There are so many wonderful people who fill the role of ‘Mom’ in our lives, and we’d love to hear about yours! We see incredible examples of dedicated caregivers every day at Ronald McDonald House Charities. Did you know you can make a donation to the Charity in honor of your mother, grandmother, relative, teacher, or friend? Make a Mother’s Day gift that supports moms and families giving their all for their hospitalized child. Thank you for your love!
